A. Overview
a. Background
Zhengzhou is the provincial capital of Henan Province, one of the important birthplaces of Chinese central plains culture and Chinese civilization, a vital city of central region of China, as well as crucial integrated transport hub and economic zone. It is located in the south of North China Plain, the lower reaches of the Yellow River, east of Kaifeng City, west of Luoyang City, south of Xuchang City and Pingdingshan City. Zhengzhou is a national historical and cultural city, for it was once the hometown of Chinese ancestor Yellow Emperor, historically five times as the state capital city, one of the Eight Great Ancient Capitals of China and one of the world’s historical city alliance members. The city has 2 world cultural heritages, 38 national key cultural relics’ protection units, with the hometown of the Yellow Emperor, mall ruins of Shang Dynasty and many other historical and cultural landscapes. On December 20, 2016, China National Development and Reform Commission issued "To promote the Rise of the Central Region during the 13th Five-year Plan", to support the construction of Zhengzhou as national central city. In the 13th Five-year period, highlighting the regional cultural characteristics of central plains, creating first-class central plains culture, has become the main objective of Zhengzhou urban culture development, which provides great supports for creation of sculptures.
Zhengzhou Municipal People’s Government plans to utilize international sculpture exhibition as basic platform, together with China Sculpture Institute, hold "Human and Nature" - China • Zhengzhou International Sculpture Exhibition, bringing in around 100 sculptures through two rounds exhibitions. With mountains and rivers as the background, combined with sculptures, sublime the cultural connotation of Zhengzhou Sculpture Park; enhance the overall artistic atmosphere of Zhengzhou, and represent the contemporary values of central plains’ culture. 2017 "Human and Nature" - China • Zhengzhou International Sculpture Exhibition plans to complete installation of 50 sculptures, with the intervention of sculptures, to make Zhengzhou Sculpture Park an open green eco-art museum. Make art into public life in the real sense and make it participate in the construction and development of the city, promote the construction of urban culture soft power.
b. Exhibition Theme
The theme of the exhibition is "Human and Nature".
With "Human and Nature" as the breakthrough point, let sculpture return to nature, and acquire inspiration from it. Under the regional culture context of China central plains, under the theme of "Human and Nature", with the unique language of sculpture, concern People and Nature, explore more possibilities in its relationship.
The 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China clearly stated that "We must establish the concept of ecological civilization that respects nature, conforms to nature and protects nature." Based on the call of the times and contemporary ecological aesthetics, under the theme of "Human and Nature", how can sculpture intervene in ecological space to explore the living space of human and nature, how to use the language of sculptural art to express the thinking of symbiosis, how to create image interaction and dialogue between human and natural, how to effectively connect the urban humanity space and environmental space, are the ecological exploration of art.
Each city has its own unique regional culture because of geographical location and historical background, Zhengzhou, as a birthplace of China central plains culture and Chinese civilization, has a deep-rooted cultural background on its shoulders. In the long history of China, central plains culture remains orthodox mainstream status because of its special geographical environment, historical status and humanistic spirit. Thus, to a certain extent, central plains culture represents Chinese traditional culture. The culture of China central plains has the origin and the maternal position in the whole Chinese civilization system, and has played a pioneering role in constructing it as well as influencing it. Based on the culture of the central plains as its core, the splendid Chinese civilization has always focused on the relationship between human and nature, emphasizing "harmony between human and nature" as well as trying to explore and realize it, which provides the exhibition theme more possibilities in infinite expansion, extension and creation.
Zhengzhou Sculpture Park is located in the northwest of the city, adjacent to Zhongyuan District and Zhengzhou High-tech Development Zone, covers an area of about 350,000 square meters. Jialu River, West of Zhengzhou City, flows through the park; east of the park is the West Sanhuan Road, next to its south is Xi Liuhu Park. A variety of landscape designs of the park becomes a key point in organically linking the lake landscapes and urban green belts together, and with a good sloping fields landscape effect, Zhengzhou Sculpture Park becomes a green lung in Zhengzhou City. Through the theme of "Human and Nature", the Sculpture Park will be the space of sculpture art. The spiritual height, cultural connotation and artistic value of the sculptures collected should be compatible with contemporary Chinese culture and Zhengzhou regional culture. Making art activate the regional vitality and dance with this land, highlighting the characteristics of the central plains regional culture. Integrating with international and modern elements of sculptures, create a first-class sculpture park as the goal, making Zhengzhou Sculpture Park a great name card for Zhengzhou City, and a modern urban environment and spiritual home.
