A. Interpretation of the Background
Yiwu, a legendary city.
November 18, 2014, in Yiwu city, east China’s Zhejiang province, the country’s longest running international freight train-YXE International Container Train-laded with bags, handicrafts, hardware and Christmas gifts started slowly towards Madrid, Spain in the 21 days journey. “YXE” (Yiwu-Xinjiang-Europe) is the one with the longest traveling distance of all Central European transport routes, passing through seven countries throughoutEurope; the sign of “YXE” achieving all line run-through can be considered the forming of significant strategic fulcrum of “One Belt,One Road”. Network advantage in global trade and developed commodity market system opened the commodity exports of “New Silk Road” in addition to its original shipping way. As the world’s largest small commodity distribution center, Yiwu has become a leader and starting point of the economic zone of New Silk Road, and certainly has taken up its new mission-becoming a platform for China to the world.
However, in the super platform of “One Belt,One Road”, only with “Made inChina” is not enough. Since ancient times,Silk Roadhas played a very important role for the development and communication of Eastern and Western cultures. Our country’s “One Belt,One Road” strategy will open up new channels for Chinese and Eurasian economy and culture, which has far-reaching significance. Cultural influence is beyond time and space, and across borders. If ourNew Silk Roadgoes with the help of culture, it will definitely further enhance the international reputation and influence of Yiwu. Combining with an important opportunity to build “One Belt, One Road”, we will actively take the advantage of “humanity first” by organizing the “New Silk Road, New Starting Point- the First ‘Dream of Sunbird’ International Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition”, to speak good Chinese story, to spread good Chinese voice. Let “Dream of Sunbird” and even “Chinese Dream” and with the desire for a better life and bright prospects of neighboring countries link together, making a contribution to the cultural exchanges and cooperation of the “ One Belt, One Road” countries.
B. Overview of the Theme
“Jin Wu” is the totem of Sunbird. Yiwu has the saying of “Jin Wu Zai Ri” (金乌载日)since ancient times. In the dialect of Yiwu, the “Ri”(日) is still referred to as “Wu”(乌), such as “Wu Yin”(乌阴)representing the sun going down and the sun rises being called “Ri Tou Wu Shang Lai”(日头乌上来). The so called “Wu” means the sun; the so called traders means the bird god. It is worth mentioning that the Sunbird was a common totem of ancient humans. The worship of sun and birds is the two worships of earliest human societies . “Dream of Sunbird” is to use the language of sculpture to create an ideal world like the totem worship! Since the beginning, we will continuously hold annually Outdoor Sculpture Invitational Exhibition, and gradually integrate into the most classical contemporary culture themes and elements of related countries along “One Belt,One Road”. With our most extraordinary creativity and imagination, we will explore the visual limitation of art, and inspire thinking frontier of human. “Yiwu Sculpture Park” will not only become an important platform to research and lead the development of the world’s public art, but also will become a monument in the “One Belt, One Road” strategy.
“New Silk Road, New Starting Point - the First Dream of Sunbird International Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition” will invite including 7 countries along the YXE Road-Kazakhstan, Russia, Belarus, Poland, Germany, France, and China, with a total number of 40 well-known contemporary sculptors, to make sculptures for Yiwu, continuously creating three-dimensional visual spectacle.
In the project activities, we will strengthen the history and culture research and study of countries along the New Silk Road. Continue to explore the culture and the humanistic spirit of ancientSilk Road, and give it a new meaning of the times. We will invite artists to create characteristic works of art under the theme of “New Silk Road”. Using sculpture as a forerunner, we will carry out extensive cooperation and cultural exchanges, and spread the outstanding culture of Chinese nation, by way of holding relics exhibitions mutually, holding high-profile symposiums, carrying out “Re-explore ancient Silk Road” activities and other cultural investigation activities. Make countries and people along the road share the development fruits of contemporaryChinatogether, and understand the peaceful development wishes ofChina.

Section Two: The Invitation of the Art Works
1. Selection of Artists
The exhibition organizing committee will set up an expert nomination committee. The nomination committee will be responsible to nominate and eventually invite 40 well-known artists along the YXE road- Kazakhstan, Russia, Belarus, Poland, Germany, France, Spain and other countries-to participate this exhibition.The compliment for each of the invited artist is 300,000 yuan after tax, not including costs of materials and making of artistic pieces for the exhibition.
2. NewSilk Road New Starting Point-The First “Dream of Sunbird” International Outdoor Sculpture Invitational Exhibition
All the invited artists will be directly selected for the New Silk Road New Starting Point-the First “Dream of Sunbird” International Outdoor Sculpture Invitational Exhibition. Each artist will be invited to create an outdoor sculpture freely in the size of 3 meters above. All the charge will be assumed by the organizing committee, and all the selected works will be permanently collected by the Yiwu Municipal Government.

3. All listed art works will be included in the “New Silk Road, New Starting Point-The First “Dream of Sunbird” International Outdoor Sculpture Invitational Exhibition Art Works Catalogue”. The exhibition organizing committee will give every listed artist certificate of participation and three copies of the catalogue.
4. Collecting Details
(1) All applicants must submit photo materials of works to the committee and fill in the corresponding forms. All required materials including the electronic registration form, exhibits project pictures, personal photo and a scanned copy of ID card (passport) must be sent to:yiwudiaosudazhan@126.combefore August 15th, 2015. If more than one piece of work are submitted, please make sure that the pictures correspond to their descriptions clearly; installation works must have clear described assembling structures (all electronic pictures sent via email should be at least 300DPI). The registration form should be filled up without missing any item. English should be the language in use for oversea participants (except the ethnic Chinese). Late applications will not be accepted.
(2) The art committee will send the invitation letter and exhibition agreement to the selected participants to specify the responsibility, right and obligation of the two parties before August 31th, 2015. The selected participants should send the signed agreement along with a draft sculpture work (about 30-50 centimeters of its size) to the art committee before September 30th, 2015. The details will be decided by the agreement.
5. The Protection of Intellectual Property Rights
(1) The project and plan submitted by the participants must not violate and infringe upon the patent, copyright, trademark, defamation or any other legitimate right and interest of the third party.
(2) Any text, images, graphics, audio or video material appeared in the submitted art works and projects of the applicants are protected by copyright, trademark and all other proprietary legal rights. No information mentioned above shall be released to the public without the consent of the participant.
(3) The organizers of the exhibition reserve the right to publish the art works catalogue and the distribution of catalogue, as well as authorize Yiwu Municipal Government the right of its usage in public welfare.
Section Three: The Making of Art Works
The 40 pieces award winning art works are to be produced in the professional factory designated by the organizing committee. Figurative realistic sculptures should be exemplified by the artist him/herself. The making of the end product will be during October 1st 2015 to March 15th 2016. During this time, the artist must go to the factory and supervise the production process at least once. Accommodation will be provided by the art committee. Artists who fail to perform the supervision are considered to give up their right and qualification for the award voluntarily. The exhibition organizing committee will organize the supervision department to coordinate and supervise the manufacturing process.
Section Four:ChinaSculpture Art Forum
China Sculpture Art Forum is a grand sculpture art forum continually held by China Sculpture Institute. We will invite the participation of well-known experts, artists, collectors, directors of large art institutions and media from home and abroad to join us in the high quality academic seminars, lectures and receptions to enhance the academic quality of sculpture exhibitions, to expand the comprehensive influence of sculpture art in the field and to build the communication platform for academic exchange, high-end cooperation and promotion.
